In early August we did a little lesson on teddy bears in anticipation of a very fun annual summer event - the TeddyBear Parade that is part of Coopersville's SummerFest. We started out by gathering all of the teddy bears we could find from all over the house. They we got the balance out and tried to see which bear was the heaviest and how many little bears weighed as much as a bigger bear.

We moved on to a literacy activity where Kaitlyn had to sort out the picture cards that started with a "/B/" sound and place them on a picture of bear. Then I hid all of the bears and Kaitlyn went on a "bear hunt" to find them. We followed that up by reading the classic kids book "We're Going on a Bear Hunt". We did the Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear Turn Around rhyme a few times and then turned the music up and danced with our teddy bears around the house to this crazy song by Hap Palmer about throwing teddy bears and catching them. We ended the structured activity with a bear craft where Kaitlyn had fun painting it pink with a tooth brush to get a furry look. Of course her bear could be none other than pink - her favorite!
Bear play spilled into the rest of the day as she had fun feeding and dressing and nurturing most of the bears for the rest of the day. I was elated with the excitement she showed toward doing a "lesson" since we had taken a break from preschool stuff for the summer. Looking forward to lots of learning and fun this fall! And aren't we glad that homeschool requires no dresscode... gotta love learning in your jammies!
