Windy Wind

I had been planning to do a little lesson with Kaitlyn on "Wind" sometime in March and today seemed like the perfect day! What a glorious day it is! We started out by playing a game with all different hats and figuring out which type of worker the hat went to and then reading a silly poem about how that hat blew away. And then we went on to do a little game with a great book called The Wind Blew by Pat Hutchins. We also made our own wind inside by getting out the blow dryer and figuring out which things were light enough to blow in the wind and which things weren't. And then we took the lesson outside. We learned a song about Spring winds and we used our little "wind wands" to act out the motions of the song. Kaitlyn had a blast running with the wand and letting it blow in the wind. Then we got some things out and watched what happened when we let them go in the wind: a balloon, an envelope, a scarf and a hat. We were having a great time until the wind blew the balloon into one of our rose bushes and it popped. Oops .. that wasn't part of the plan! :) Luckily I still had one prop left; a plastic bag. I showed Kaitlyn how we could actually catch wind. She thought that was fun and ran around and did that for awhile. Then we went and got the swings out of the shed and played in the backyard before we both decided that there was too much wind for us so we headed indoors. After lunch we did a fun wind-related craft outside too. We mixed some paint and water and dropped it on paper and then used straws to blow the paint around. It proved to be more difficult than I thought but fun none-the-less. I just realized that I didn't get Kaitlyn's kite out to fly and that was one of the things I had planned. So maybe when she gets up from her nap she'll be up for more outside play today.
